Day 120 to Day 131 - Three States and plenty of visits!

(A brief note from Tech Support and Napkin: Everything has become a little jumbled for a lot of reasons so sorry for the delay.  We have reconstructed the time line as best as we can.  Dates are off depending on when Reflex sent the pictures and info.  The weather has been atrocious in PA with lots of flooding and workarounds just to stay on the trail.  However, as they say in showbiz, the show must go on!!  This is a THREE-part post, so don't miss the other two!  Enjoy!)

 Monday, August 6th
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 120 - Napkin and Reflex hiked Mt Minsi, through the Delaware Water Gap, and into NJ at mile marker 1296.5

Sunday, August 12th
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 126 - New Jersey

Trail magic from Merlot just when I needed it most!  Was feeling a bit down, cut my day short AND THEN Merlot comes in with cheer!  He hiked in ice cold beers!

He stayed to chat for 45 minutes and left a few extras in case anyone else showed up (or if I was extra thirsty hehe).  Trail magic at its finest!


Monday, August 13th
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 127 - Entering New York, approximate mile marker 1356
Officially entering New York, my ninth state!

This would have been Napkin's favorite part of the day...  Rebar footholds!

Bouldering wet purple rocks all day!  FUN!


Tuesday, August 14th through Wednesday, August 15th
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 128 - 129: Bear Mountain, NY Approximate mile marker 1390
Napkin: Meeting Reflex today at Bear Mountain with Aunt Ruth!  Of course, it's raining again.
 

The next day was better at Perkins Memorial Park

After some exploring, we dropped Reflex off to continue her trip
 

 While we were a bit late for the BBQ, Reflex did get to see the results of too much fun at the shelter.  haha  :)


Monday, August 17th
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 131 - Connecticut and friends!  Approximate mile marker: 1440
Made it to New England! (state 10 of  14)

Uncle Carl and Aunt Lidia visited me on the Trail!

    You girls are doing a lot of miles. Looks like you are meeting lots of friends on your trip. That is a great picture of you and Napkin. A few ice cold beers-has to taste great after a long day of hiking. That's a neat ladder in the rock. Napkin: did you see any bears on bear mountain? haha. Must have been nice to see your Aunt and Uncle on the trail. You're getting closer to the end. Keep the pictures coming they're great, be safe and have fun.

(Posting note:  The girls drove down to Georgia today with Sarge and are preparing for their hike!  So far, the forecast looks wet, but spirits are still high!  The plan is to send pictures/updates whenever cell reception is accessible and battery power is still high.  Stay tuned for more updates as SG squared start the hike and make their way through Georgia!) Drove to the beginning of the AT in Georgia today, super long drive (14 hours!), but nothing compared to what we are about to do!  Our hiker legs are getting restless.  Here, we passed the AT on the PA Turnpike. The stats from the trailhead in Georgia.  ONLY 2190.9 miles left to go!  Easy, right? :) Samantha and I are at the entrance to the approach trail.  Here we go, tomorrow is the big day!!

The beginning

Welcome everyone!! At last - The blog is finally set up and started.  Jonathan and Michael have set this up for us and now it is up to Samantha and me to supply content and pictures.  A note about the blog name - SG squared stands for Susan Grasman and Samantha Grasman - double trouble hiking the Appalachian Trail. I cannot believe all the snow we had yesterday.  Hopefully, we have seen the last of it and it will warm up by Monday down south especially in the evenings. We are busy gathering last minute supplies and weighing everything.  More about final pack weight later when we get to Georgia. Special thanks to all regarding supplies and much needed support and encouragement for this journey. We are very excited and (I'm) a little nervous waiting for the start date. Susan's Journal Entry 5 - Recorded Friday, April 6th for the preceding two days. Day 10 (Hiawassee, Georgia) - "Tuesday 4/3/18 - Zero day.  Samantha, Mike & Devon went fishing today while Sam, JoAnn, & I got some supplies & picked up our first mail drop box.  Later we went to dinner at this restaurant where Samantha earned her trail name." - Susan " I got my trail name this week!!
