Day 23 to Day 30 - A month on the trail!

Well folks.  Sorry for another long delay.  Jon decided to go off to London.  Lets catch up on the hiker's recent adventures.

Monday April 16th 

Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 23 Mile Marker 136.7 to 150 to reach Stecoah Gap.

 Sometimes the trail is like this and you don't know where to take your next step.  And sometimes you have awkward stairs.

Tree leafing.  And a Bleeding Heart found along the trail!


Success.  Dry and relaxing at the NOC.

Tuesday April 17th 
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 24 Mile Marker 150 to 157.9 to reach Yellow Creek Road









Wednesday April 18th 
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 25 Mile Marker 157.9 to 165.9 to reach Fontana Dam Visitor Center

 Aquone Mountain Lodge.

Today ice was raining out of the trees as everything warmed up.  It was very windy but sunny.

Thursday April 19th 
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 26.  A zero day at Fontana Dam.
We are at the start of the AT Trail that goes into the Smokies.  Clingman's Dome Trail.

Friday April 20th 
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 27 Mile Marker 165.9 to 177.3 to reach Mollies Ridge

Susan, "I am taking a break from hiking for a couple of week's while Sam continues on the trail.  Grandma and Grandpa were in a car accident and Phyllis broke her leg getting out of the vehicle.  She is out of surgery now, but they made her wait for a couple of days before operating.  They had to put her femur back together.  Three months of no weight on the leg.  No AT for her this year."

Saturday April 21st 
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 28 Mile Marker 177.3 to 195.1 to reach Silers Bald
Umm... where???



Uphill... The Whole Time in the Smokies!!

Sunday April 22nd
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 29 Mile Marker 195.1 to 207.3 to reach Newfound Gap

Clingman's Dome is the highest point on the AT, in the smokies, and in the state of Tennessee.


At 200 Miles!!


Monday April 23rd
Sam's AT Mileage Tracker: Day 30 - zero day due to 70 mph winds and torrential rain on the mountain.

Here was a nice view from the other day.

    That looks cold with the snow , I wouldn't have left the mountain lodge until June. Who am I kidding--I wouldn't be there anytime! The pictures look great-be safe and have fun.

(Posting note:  The girls drove down to Georgia today with Sarge and are preparing for their hike!  So far, the forecast looks wet, but spirits are still high!  The plan is to send pictures/updates whenever cell reception is accessible and battery power is still high.  Stay tuned for more updates as SG squared start the hike and make their way through Georgia!) Drove to the beginning of the AT in Georgia today, super long drive (14 hours!), but nothing compared to what we are about to do!  Our hiker legs are getting restless.  Here, we passed the AT on the PA Turnpike. The stats from the trailhead in Georgia.  ONLY 2190.9 miles left to go!  Easy, right? :) Samantha and I are at the entrance to the approach trail.  Here we go, tomorrow is the big day!!

The beginning

Welcome everyone!! At last - The blog is finally set up and started.  Jonathan and Michael have set this up for us and now it is up to Samantha and me to supply content and pictures.  A note about the blog name - SG squared stands for Susan Grasman and Samantha Grasman - double trouble hiking the Appalachian Trail. I cannot believe all the snow we had yesterday.  Hopefully, we have seen the last of it and it will warm up by Monday down south especially in the evenings. We are busy gathering last minute supplies and weighing everything.  More about final pack weight later when we get to Georgia. Special thanks to all regarding supplies and much needed support and encouragement for this journey. We are very excited and (I'm) a little nervous waiting for the start date.
